Event Description

This monthly workshop will take about 4 hours. In the cooler months we will probably not extract honey and will only look at bees in the honey super. In warmer months the workshop is 2hrs earlier. I have a working Flow Hive, which I just converted to side by side configuration to avoid heavy lifting.

Light to moderate rain and winds would not affect the workshop. If the workshop is cancelled, due to poor weather, I’ll send out an email or SMS.

This method of bee keeping, the most popular one, might be called ‘kinder beekeeping’, because when we collect honey, we do not destroy the comb, by squashing/squeezing out the honey, leaving a mess of wax (as in ‘natural beekeeping’), which might be used for candle making etc, or sold. Bees need to consume 6-8kg of honey to produce 1kg of wax. So, since we recycle the comb, it’s easier on the bees. You have to decide what you want to take from the bees. I cover the basic equipment use and care of the bees, including controlling pests and diseases.

My shed was in Sustainable House Day 2016, 2017 and has been accepted for 2018. During the workshop I’ll give a short printout of my sustainable features, which you can inquire about at another time, or after the workshop.

Picture: showing the black wax taken out of a frame to prevent disease build up, swarming and hive beetle. The small hive beetle can smell the strong smell of this old wax and more easily find it. Black wax is harder to work with for both bees and people.
