What better way to celebrate IPD than by getting your hands dirty and helping implement a permaculture design with a great community of people!? Our next Permablitz is May 26th! It’s an interesting site with lots of sun exposure – a little too much at times! – and a sloped front yard on a corner block. They also have a backyard pool that they are looking at removing in the next few years, and are keen to maintain some space for social gatherings and an outdoor space for pets. This blitz will focus on building and improving soil and mitigating the effects of the strong sun/wind exposure, increasing their kitchen garden space and adding effective composting, and laying the groundwork for future elements of the design (including chickens and water storage) to be implemented at a later date. On the day, we will be:
- creating a swaled front yard/verge garden to manage the flow of water on the slope, minimise mowing, build soil, add plant life and habitat, and soften the exposure to the street
- enhancing and extending existing kitchen garden, creating an effective compost zone and laying the groundwork for that area to transition away from being the pool yard
- sheet mulching to control grass and weeds
Where: Kanahooka When: Saturday 26th May 10-4pm RSVP: email email@example.com by Friday May 18th to register your interest. Please note, it is ESSENTIAL that you email us at the gmail address to register for the blitz. We will blitz rain, hail or shine and will provide a delicious lunch, bottomless cups of tea/coffee and cold beverages for everyone. This event is free and open to all regardless of skill level. We welcome first time gardeners.
Important note for people who wish to bring kids
One of the sites we will be working on is inside a pool fence for a large inground pool. It’s essential that if you bring kids you have them with you or an adult carer at all times. Kids are welcome, but please make sure you keep them safe as we are unable to monitor them or close that area off.
Permablitz the Gong
Permablitz the Gong are a volunteer collective of permaculture designers who host 3-4 permablitzes a year. Permablitzes are informal gatherings with the aim of creating edible gardens and sharing skills related to permaculture and sustainable living. You meet great people, have fun, and if you come to 3 or more blitzes you are eligible for one at your house!
