Come join us for a comprehensive seminar on Composting toilets and water management! Bring a potluck lunch to share.

Workshop Outline:

Salt Spring Island has increasingly been affected by impacts to available water sources through increased periods of drought, impacts to surface source waters from algae blooms, decreased groundwater, and increased draws upon all the water sources to meet both residential and agricultural needs.
There is an evolving awareness of the need for solutions to better conserve and more responsibly use our water. The workshop series is intended to introduce a set of solutions, what we collectively refer to a responsible water alternatives. The workshop will cover these solution in two 2 hour session, for a combined 4 hours total, from 10am- 3pm.


Composting Toilets (Time 1.5 hrs, 10 – 11:30am)
• The Sewerage System regulations and new BC Manual of Composting Toilets and Greywater Practice
• Overview of systems, how they work, what systems are appropriate for what applications
• Example of system Selection – using Phoenix Farm
• Safety and the environment

Greywater Reuse (Time 0.5 hr, 11:30 – 12 noon)
• Types of greywater
• Safety and the environment
• System options
• Protocol to use the BC Provincial regulations

Rainwater Harvesting (Time 1hr, 1 – 1:45pm)
• Potable and non-potable overview
• Potable Design (materials, pre-filtration, aeration, filtration, sterilization)

Storage using Landscaping and Soils (Time 0.5 hr, 1:45 – 2:15pm)
• Landscaping to slow, spread and sink the water

Plants for a Changing Climate (Time 0.5 hr, 2:15 – 3pm)
• A review of plants that are drought tolerant
• Fruits and Nuts

Bio – Gord Baird – Eco-Sense

Gord Baird is the co-creator and owner builder of the award winning Eco-Sense home, located in the Highlands of Victoria, BC, awarded Living Building Challenge recognition in 2010. This accomplishment combines a net zero carbon, zero waste home, with integrated sustainable systems and a net-zero water balance. Impressive when you consider that it includes a Nursery, small scale farm, and produces 90% of their family’s food. They incorporate a food forest into their perennial food systems, covering over 300 species of plants including some 65 nut trees and 80 fruit trees upon a drought prone hilly outcrop, and employ rain water harvesting, grey water, compost toilets and ecological soil and landscape systems.

• American Rain Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA) Accredited Professional
• Designing, consulting and building rainwater systems, grey water, mechanical systems, compost toilets, and living roofs
• Water Commissioner for both the CRD Regional Water Supply and JDF Water

• Building science research on energy performance, thermodynamic and vapour
properties of earthen buildings
• Technical editor of the recent BC Ministry of Health’s Manual of Compost

• Owns and runs a nursery focused on food forestry and permaculture
• Director with the Capital Region Invasive Species Partnership
• Director with the BCFTA (BC Fruit Testers Association)
• Councillor for the District of Highlands
• Past director for CANARM (Canadian Association for Rainwater Management)
• Author of Essential Composting Toilets – A guide to options, design, installation and use.
